Position Summary: Working collaboratively with Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the Great Basin Institute is recruiting an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Education Specialist to learn about and participate in activities focused on preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species by recreational watercraft. The Aquatic Invasive Species Education Specialist (Research Associate Program) assists National Park Service personnel with outreach efforts, prevention, and mitigation related to aquatic invasive species at the park. This Research Associate position is based out of Boulder City, Nevada, where Lake Mead National Recreation Area Headquarters is located. This position will perform a variety of duties including (1) Working as part of a diverse outreach team to provide exceptional education messages about aquatic invasive species, water safety and park information to public audiences; (2) Facilitate visitor contacts to create understanding of park resources, aquatic invasive species, and boater safety and responsibility; (3) Provide limited assistance for resource management activities (e.g., water sampling, AIS monitoring); and (4) Encourage visitors to uphold the mission of the National Park Service. Primary Responsibilities: Essential tasks and duties Conduct education and outreach activities related to aquatic invasive species with targeted user groups in coordination with park staff; Provide community members, visitors, and local constituents with information on park resources, conservation and ecologically sound practices as well as the laws, rules, and regulations developed to protect park resources; In cooperation with the park education technician and other NPS staff, assist with development of materials and programs for targeted user groups related to aquatic invasive species; Observe and evaluate natural resource conditions; Collect and organize field data using standardized procedures and equipment; Ensure quality control of collected data; Support the preparation of draft project reports, including literature research, descriptions of methods, preliminary data analysis, graphs and charts; Provide logistical support; and Provide assistance on other resource management projects, as needed. Related Responsibilities: Perform work safely by adhering to all established safety procedures including daily check-in/check-out procedures; Participate in trainings provided by Lake Mead National Recreation Area staff; Professionally represent Great Basin Institute, partnering with Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the National Park Service, in the park and in the surrounding community; Meet with NPS partners on a weekly basis; and Assist with compiling related information for quarterly and annual reporting. Required Skills or Qualifications: Bachelors degree in environmental science, environmental studies, recreation, or education and commensurate field experience, required Experience conducting interpretation, highly desirable; Experience developing and implementing environmental education and outreach programs and curricula, desired; Motivated, self-starter who is detail oriented; Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with a diverse public in a variety of forums; Willing to learn about Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the National Park Service; Willingness to learn about aquatic species threats, biology, transport and abatement; Willingness to learn about the various laws, agency policies, rules, and regulations which apply to the protection of park resources and specific knowledge of the Federal, Park, and State laws pertaining to the transport of invasive species; Ability to take direction, communicate, and work with others as a member of a team; Ability to follow set procedures and systematic methods for a variety of tasks; Possess clean, valid, state-issued drivers license; and Ability to stand, stoop, lift, bend, and walk for extended periods of time in potentially adverse weather conditions and extreme temperatures. Ability to speak Spanish conversationally, helpful but not required. Compensation: Rate of pay: $16.00/hour Health, Dental and Vision Insurance will be completely paid for at no cost to you by the Great Basin Institute. Timeline: 26 week appointment beginning February 2020 or upon completion of a Department of Interior background investigation; Potential for an extension up to one year, pending positive performance review and available funding; 40 hours per week; overtime and weekend work may occasionally be required. Location: This Research Associate position will be based out of Boulder City, Nevada where the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Headquarters is located. It is a 20 minute drive from the city of Henderson which lies on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Lake Mead National Recreation Area encompasses 1.5 million acres in southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, in the transition of the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. It hosts 7.5 million visitors per year. Schedule: Work will typically be performed Monday-Friday during normal business hours, but may include weekends and holidays when special events are scheduled. The majority of work is conducted during daylight hours. The majority of work hours will be spent indoors assisting with the development and delivery of aquatic invasive species educational programs and outreach materials. Additional tasks may collecting visitor use statistics (e.g. trailer counts), entering visitor contact data, compiling data, and assisting in reporting outreach and educational activities. Depending on the interest and aptitude of the Research Associate, there may be opportunities to assist with natural resource research and monitoring projects.
