The Senior Behavioral Medical Director serves as the clinical team leader for HPN/SHL Behavioral membership. They are accountable for the strategic approach to executing our annual business objectives in alignment with the larger organization. They work collaboratively with other functional partners such as Continuity of Care Department, Quality Improvement, State and Legal Compliance, providing medical subject matter expertise. The SMD is also actively involved in the implementation, supervision, oversight and evaluation of the Utilization Management, Care Coordination and Quality of Care programs, develops and implements policies and procedures. The SMD will also monitor the consistency with which Utilization Management criteria are applied; through supervision, case review, training and in consultations with treating providers, making coverage decisions and participates in committee meetings.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead physician for the Behavioral Health plan with direct oversight and accountability for behavioral UM and CM teams and outcomes
  • Leadership and oversight of contract adherence
  • Develops programs to promote integration of physical and behavioral health services which support continuity and coordination among all network providers
  • Contribute and lead the collaboration for Utilization Management, Care Coordination and Quality of Care discussions for HPN/SHL membership
  • Monitors behavioral healthcare utilization authorization and claims data for all healthcare services
  • Assures that policies adhere to contractual obligations
  • Develop targeted education and training for and provide clinical guidance to the Care Advocates
  • Performs Clinical Case reviews in conjunction with Clinical and Quality departments
  • Consultation with practitioners in the HPN/SHL clinical network
  • Participation in clinical workgroups as required
  • Chairing and participating in committees
  • Collaborates in network provider initiatives and engagement
  • Supports cultural awareness and promotes activities related to health equity in an effort to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities
  • Travel for state and key stakeholder meetings as needed

    Required Qualification
    • Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy
    • Current license to practice as a physician without restrictions in the state of Nevada or willing to obtain
    • Board certified in Psychiatry
    • Reside in the state of Nevada
    • 2+ years of management experience overseeing multidisciplinary teams
    • Demonstrated understanding of the clinical application of the principles of engagement, empowerment, rehabilitation and recovery
    • Knowledge of discharge planning, transitions of care, post-acute care, and case management
    • Computer and typing proficiency, data analysis and solid organizational skills
    • Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential job function of this role. Candidates located in states that mandate COVID-19 booster doses must also comply with those state requirements.       Preferred Qualifications:
      • 5+ years of experience as a practicing psychiatrist post residency with both mental health and substance abuse
      • 2+ years of managed care experience
      • Experience working with community-based programs and resources to address social determinants of health

        Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Nevada residents is $293,200 to $324,800. The range and pay mix of base and bonus is variable based upon experience and metric achievement. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
