Position Summary: Working collaboratively with Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Research Associate to participate in activities focused on preventing the spread of AIS by recreational watercraft. This position will support the Lake Mead Water Resources group, Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), and Arizona Department of Fish and Game (AZDFG) Aquatic Invasive Species Programs through maintenance of decontamination units, conducting vessel inspections and decontaminations, boater education on AIS, and assisting with research and monitoring aimed at better understanding and managing AIS. Primary Responsibilities: Conduct regular maintenance of AIS decontamination units. o Perform routine preventative maintenance of hot water power washers. o Perform troubleshooting and make repairs to equipment when needed. o Coordinate with LAKE, NDOW, and AZDFG staff to manage decontamination station network. o Manage part and tool inventory. o Candidate will be enrolled in Watercraft Inspection and Decontamination Training (WIT) if not already completed and will be encouraged to pursue WIT Instructor Training. Provide boater education on AIS at Lake Mead. o Conduct inspections and decontaminations of boats primarily for quagga mussels. o Support AIS operations at special events such as free fishing days, fishing tournaments, National AIS Week. Assist with evaluating the effectiveness of AIS containment stations and developing mechanisms to optimize the efficacy of containment and prevention activities at Lake Mead. o Collect field data to identify patterns in boater use and the decontamination station network at Lake Mead. o Assist LAKE and NDOW partners in applying study results to the AIS Program at Lake Mead. Provide assistance with other resource management projects such as invasive species and water quality monitoring, depending on interest and qualifications. Related Responsibilities: Perform work safely by adhering to all established safety procedures including daily check-in/check-out procedures. Participate in trainings provided by Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Professionally represent Great Basin Institute, partnering with Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the National Park Service, in the Park and in the surrounding community. Assist with compiling related information for quarterly and annual reporting. Required Skills or Qualifications: Mechanical background with preference given to those with experience maintaining power washers. Technical or vocational training or certification in mechanics, electrical systems, AIS operations. Experience trailering boats or power washer/decontamination units. Experience performing vessel inspections and decontaminations. Knowledge and experience as a boater, either recreationally or professionally. Ability to complete, or already completed, Watercraft Inspection and Decontamination Training (WIT). Proficient in using Microsoft Word and Excel to prepare data and correspondence. Motivated, self-starter who is detail-oriented and quality-driven. Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with a diverse public in a variety of forums. Willing to learn about Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the National Park Service. Willingness to learn about aquatic species threats, biology, transport and abatement. Willingness to learn about the various laws, agency policies, rules, and regulations which apply to the protection of park resources and specific knowledge of the Federal, Park, and State laws pertaining to the transport of invasive species. Ability to take direction, communicate, and work with others as a member of a team. Possess clean, valid, state-issued drivers license. Ability to stand, stoop, lift, bend, crawl, and walk for extended periods of time, often in adverse weather conditions and extreme temperatures. Preferred Skilled or Qualifications Experience repairing and maintaining boats and trailers. Experience operating 4x4 vehicles. Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary natural resources team. Experience assisting with visitor use studies. Experience identifying visitor/boater use patterns and evaluating potential program recommendations. Compensation: Rate of pay: $19.00-21.00/hour depending on experience Health, Dental and Vision Insurance will be completely paid for at no cost to you Paid leave and holidays Timeline: 52 week appointment beginning October/November 2020 or upon completion of a Department of Interior background investigation. Exact date can be flexible for the right candidate. Potential for extension up to two years, pending positive performance review and available funding. 40 hours per week with occasional overtime. Location: This Research Associate position will be based out of Boulder City, Nevada where the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Headquarters is located. It is a 20-minute drive from the city of Henderson which lies on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Lake Mead National Recreation Area encompasses 1.5 million acres in southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, in the transition of the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. It hosts 7.5 million visitors per year. Schedule: This position will require regular weekend work. Duties may be performed on either a 5x8s or 4x10s schedule depending on holidays, special events, or other program needs. The majority of work will be conducted during daylight hours. Approximately 75% of work hours will be spent outdoors on boat ramps, beach areas, or maintenance areas within LAKE. Approximately 25% or work hours will be spent indoors entering data, compiling data, or working on procurement needs for parts and supplies. Depending on the interest and aptitude of the Research Associate, there may be opportunities to assist with natural resource research and monitoring projects in both field, laboratory, and office capacities.
